Archie Macpherson was born and raised in Shettleston in the east-end of Glasgow. As a schoolteacher firstly he was promoted to headmaster of Swinton School in Lanarkshire in the early 1960s. It was there he began part-time work with the BBC and in 1965 became full-time as presenter and commentator in Sportsreel, then Sportscene, working in that role for 28 years. He has since worked for STV, Eurosport, Talksport and Radio Clyde where he won the Sony Award for broadcasting in 1992. He has commentated on three Olympics and six FIFA World Cup Finals. In 1985 he was elected Rector of Edinburgh University. He is the author of eleven books principally on sport and broadcasting including the definitive biography of Jock Stein, histories of Scottish football, and an account of the Scotland men’s team at the FIFA World Cup.

Jonathan Northcroft is the football correspondent for The Sunday Times and current UK football journalist of the year. He began his career as a trainee reporter with The Heraldbefore selling news and current affairs a dummy and moving to his dream domain of sportswriting. He spent three years with Scotland on Sunday, writing on football and other sports and a further three years as Scottish football correspondent for The Sunday Times, before heading south of the border to focus on the English Premier League. Author of books including Fearless: The Incredible Underdog Story of Leicester City and the bestseller, One by Peter Schmeichel, he lives in Leicester.
