Travel writing residential course  with Zoe Dawes

A 2-night residential course to develop your travel writing skills in lovely Kirkcudbright on the beautiful Solway Firth coast. Discover the joy of creative writing, learn how to make the most of your holiday experience, write a compelling article or blog post.

·      Use your senses to create atmosphere

The course is run by award-winning travel writer, Zoe Dawes, who will give you plenty of opportunities to practice your writing and get feedback from her and fellow participants. Weather-permitting, you’ll be going out in the attractive harbour town to get inspiration from your surroundings.

Arrangements

Arrive in your own time on Friday afternoon.

6.30pm – meet your course tutor Zoe for pre-dinner drinks and canapés in the burns room.

7.00pm – 7.45pm Introductory talk “What is travel writing”?

8.00pm – 3 course dinner

SATURDAY

7.15am – 9.15am Breakfast in your own time

9.30am – 11.00am – Session 1 – What makes GOOD Travel Writing: examples and extracts from good and bad travel writing

11am – coffee & shortbread in the bistro

11.30 am – 1pm - Session 2 – Begin at the beginning: how to get the reader’s attention. Practice writing opener

1.00pm – Soup and sandwich lunch free time to explore Kirkcudbright’s galleries, shops etc.

2pm – 4pm Free time to explore Kirkcudbright’s galleries, shops etc and get inspiration for writing

4pm - 5.30 - 4pm - 5.30 - Session 3 – Telling your story: how to engage your audience with your travel tale. Write a short piece using personal experience 

6.30pm – meet for pre-dinner drinks and canapés in the burns room

7.00pm – Talk on the The Quirky Traveler story and travel quiz

8.00pm – 3 course dinner

SUNDAY

 7.15am – 9.15am breakfast in your own time

9.30am – 11am – Session 4 – Finding Your Voice: how to write in your own style

11.00am – coffee & shortbread in the bistro

11.30am – 1pm –Session 5 – Using the senses. Examples and writing practice to share with group

1.00pm – Soup and sandwich lunch goodbyes and departures
